British truckers to be texted criminal warnings

Authorities in Great Britain can’t seem to make up their minds about text messaging.

Just weeks after South Wales increased fines for text messaging while driving, another part of the country has decided that text messages for truck drivers are okay – as long as they are messages from police.

The Birmingham Post reported that truckers in Birmingham are now being alerted to crime on the road via emergency text messages from police.

The Promptext system, which had been in a trial phase for several months, went into official use in early September.

With the system, information is gathered from trucking industry sources and funneled to the truckers via police. The information includes reports of load theft, truck theft, warnings and other information pertinent to drivers.
