Two unannounced commercial vehicle inspections this week in two Phoenix suburbs netted more than 600 violations and took 37 non-compliant trucks off the road.
According to the Arizona Republic, a joint task force – made up of officers from the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Public Safety and a number of local law enforcement agencies – set up inspection points Monday, Nov. 1, in Gilbert, and in Tempe, on Tuesday, Nov. 2, to nab unsafe commercial vehicles.
In Gilbert, officers checked 42 trucks, finding 311 violations and taking 22 trucks and five drivers off the road.
The following day in Tempe, 73 commercial vehicles were inspected. Two drivers were arrested on drug charges, 15 vehicles and six drivers were sidelined, and about 304 violations were recorded.
“A lot of (the violations) involve equipment and are small things they need to take care of before they get bigger,” Mesa Police Sgt. Bruce Jones told the Republic.
In addition to citations, each driver who was pulled over received an informational pamphlet on rules and regulations, the Republic reported.
