Iowa DOT OKs $2 billion for roads

Iowa transportation officials have signed off on a $2 billion, five-year highway plan that covers new construction and repairs statewide.

The plan, approved Tuesday, Nov. 1, by the Iowa Transportation Commission, will average $400 million in annual roadwork from 2006 to 2010.

Overall, state spending on repairs will increase to about $92 million each year during the next five years. That’s up $42 million a year compared to now.

The plan is supposed to be updated annually, but delays in federal transportation legislation have resulted in several years of delays since the previous version was approved, The Quad City Times reported.

The construction list includes the renovation of Interstate 29 in Sioux City , finishing the Interstate 235 reconstruction project in the Des Moines area in 2007, as well as construction on several new four-lane corridors. But the primary emphasis is on rebuilding existing highways statewide.
