For once, rolling blackouts can’t be blamed for something that runs on electricity not working in Los Angeles.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the city’s 16 red-light cameras – which have brought in about 63,000 citations in the last four years – have not been turned on since June, and could remain that way for several months.
The reasoning behind the camera shutdown has nothing to do with budgets or legalities – it’s about bureaucracy, City Councilman Dennis Zine told the Times.
“I’d be surprised if any of them were online before next year,” Zine said.
Affiliated Computer Services had the contract with the city until June 14, but it was not renewed, nor was a new company contracted, after it expired.
