Truck driver charged in truck explosion in Utah

The driver of a tractor-trailer that exploded while carrying 18 tons of explosives on U.S. Highway 6 in Utah in August has been charged.

Travis Stewart of Rexburg , ID , was charged in the 4th District Court with causing a catastrophe, reckless endangerment and reckless driving, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

A section of U.S. Highway 6 between Provo and Price was closed to traffic Aug. 10 after the tractor-trailer carrying more than 35,000 pounds of explosives overturned, caught fire, then exploded, leaving only a huge crater where the road used to be.

No one died, but 19 people were injured, including Stewart and a passenger in his cab. The blast left a crater about 70 feet wide and 30 feet deep.

According to The Associated Press, witnesses told police the driver appeared to lose control on a curve before the rig overturned and caught fire. The driver’s passenger helped him get out of the cab.

Witnesses said the driver was dazed, but managed to utter the word “explosives” so that rescuers were alerted to the danger and moved back from the truck before it blew up. The AP reported that, after the explosion, there was nothing left of the truck.
