Transportation borrowing package on Maine's fall ballot

A question on Maine’s Nov. 8 statewide ballot would earmark millions for transportation work in the state.

Question 2 asks voters to approve borrowing $33.1 million for improvements to highways and bridges. Some money would go to airports, public transit, ferries, ports and more.

The question is one of five bond requests totaling $83 million that the Maine Legislature authorized to go before voters this fall. It is expected to make the state eligible for $158 million in matching federal funds, the Kennebec Journal reported.

The transportation package includes $27 million for highway and bridgework. Of that total, $15 million would be used for reconstructing more than 100 miles of highways and improvements to more than 84 bridges throughout the state.

The Waldo Hancock Bridge replacement would get $12 million, the newspaper reported.

The last time voters in Maine failed to approve a transportation bond that included roads and bridges was 1969.
