A practice followed by professional truck drivers for decades would be mandatory for all drivers if a bill in the Pennsylvania House is approved.
The measure, dubbed the “Move Over” bill, is designed to protect police and other emergency personnel during roadside stops.
Motorists would be required to maintain a safe distance and reduce speed when approaching stationary emergency vehicles that are on or within 12 feet of the road with their lights flashing.
Sponsored by Rep. Teresa Forcier, R-Titusville, the bill would require drivers to merge into a lane further away from an emergency vehicle. On two-lane highways, drivers would be required to reduce speed before passing the emergency vehicle.
Failure to obey the rule could result in a fine up to $300.
If a violation results in an accident, the offender could lose their license for between 90 days and one year.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, at least 30 states have implemented similar safety zone rules. Colorado and North Carolina implemented their rules earlier this year.
Pennsylvania’s effort – HB526 – is in the House Transportation Committee.
A similar measure in New Jersey also remains under review.
