Improvement plan approved for NY Thruway

The New York Thruway Authority has approved a $913 million budget for next year.

The budget includes the first projects to be taken on as part of a $2 billion capital improvement plan.

The massive program of road, bridges and service areas is funded, in part, by a 25 percent boost in toll fees that took effect in May, the Albany Times Union reported.

After the first full year of implementation, the increased tolls are expected to boost toll income by nearly $58 million next year to $575 million. In 2004, revenue from tolls was $439 million.

In all, the Thruway’s 2006 spending plan is expected to be 26 percent larger than this year’s. The majority of growth comes from the year’s $395 million in capital project spending, which makes up more than 40 percent of the budget, the newspaper reported.

Among the projects planned for next year are improvements to several interchanges, including those at Exits 23, 24, 25 and 27 near Albany. In addition, more lanes will be converted for E-ZPass users.
