Speed-on-green cameras gain popularity in Arizona

As red-light cameras become more pervasive across the country, several cities in Arizona are making their traffic-enforcement cameras do double duty.

The City Council of Mesa, AZ, voted the week of Oct. 10 to increase the number of red-light cameras from 13 to 30. Many of those cameras will also be able to capture and ticket drivers who speed through green or yellow lights. Mesa joins nearby Chandler and Scottsdale as cities using the “speed-on-green” technology, according to the Arizona Republic.

With the new cameras – which rely on digital imaging as opposed to traditional film – drivers who drive through the camera-equipped intersections at 11 mph or more over the speed limit will be photographed, and will receive a ticket in the mail.

“The whole point is safety,” Vice Mayor Claudia Walters told the Republic of the city’s new $2.7 million camera system.

However, opponents to the new cameras said the equipment provides another way for the government to control its citizens.

“It just looks like Big Brother’s watching you,” City Councilmember Janie Thom, who voted against the system, said during the council meeting.
