A former city foreman for the city of Chicago has been sentenced to six months in prison for his involvement with the city’s scandal-ridden Hired Truck program.
On Tuesday, Oct. 11, a U.S. District Judge convicted Robert Laino for stealing $45,000 worth of asphalt and taking about $14,000 in bribes, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The six-month sentence was lowered from a potential two-year sentence after Laino cooperated with the ongoing federal investigation.
Laino will also have to pay back the $45,000 value of the stolen asphalt, as well as $2,750 for the cost of the federal investigation, the Chicago Tribune reported.
To date, 36 individuals – including 20 city workers – have been charged in the ongoing investigation of the city program, in which city officials accepted bribes and political campaign contributions from trucking companies in exchange for city work. Twenty-three of those charged have so far pleaded guilty.
