Delaware slashes tolls for night trips on interstate

In an effort to decrease the amount of daytime traffic on Interstate 95, the Delaware Department of Transportation has decreased the tolls for truckers along that highway during off-peak hours.

As of Oct. 1, tolls were slashed for trips along the road between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. for drivers using the EZ-Pass electronic payment system. For a six-axle truck, the fee drops from $10 during the day to $2.50 at night.

For a five-axle vehicle, the fee drops to $2, while four-axle vehicles can get by for just $1.50. Three-axles cost $1.25. The fee for two-axle vehicles, $3, was actually increased from $2.

Nathan Hayward, secretary of the Delaware Department of Transportation, told USA Today that the 24-mile stretch of highway, which runs between the Maryland and Pennsylvania borders, is one of the busiest highways in the country.

“We’re halfway between Washington, DC, and New York, and we’re growing at 5 percent to 6 percent a year,” he said. “Our thought was to induce truck drivers to use the road at night. We have encouraged our sister states up and down the East Coast to look at their toll roads in the same way we have.”
