Judge freezes personal assets of Connecticut trucking owner

More than a week after freezing the assets of American Crushing and Recycling – the Bloomfield, CT, -based company whose truck was involved in a fatal accident earlier this year – a judge has ordered the personal assets of the company’s owner frozen as well.

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal requested the action after he found that owner David Wilcox had used the company’s checking account to pay personal expenses, according to Newsday.

The company’s business assets were frozen after Wilcox had attempted to sell off several of its trucks, which had been put out-of-service by the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

American Crushing & Recycling has been under investigation since a July 29 crash on Avon Mountain involving one of its trucks that claimed the lives of four people, including the truck driver.

At least one victim’s family has filed suit against the company, and others are expected to follow. Blumenthal said this is why he requested the company’s assets be frozen.

Newsday said that Blumenthal further argued that there is no distinction between Wilcox’s personal assets and those of the company because Wilcox spent more than $5,000 in company money at the Mohegan Sun Casino and used the company’s corporate checkbook to pay personal credit card charges.

Judge Vanessa Bryant agreed and suspended Wilcox’s personal assets immediately. Wilcox is due in court Oct. 17. He was scheduled to appear Oct. 4, but failed to show up for that date.
