Texas truckers protest diesel costs

Dozens of trucks took to one of Houston ’s main freeways Friday, Oct. 7, to protest the rising cost of fuel. Diesel in Houston was selling for about $3.29 per gallon Monday, Oct. 10, according to HoustonGasPrices.com.

Some sources put the number at close to 100, though the Houston Chronicle reported nearly 200 truckers circling the city’s 610 Loop at 20 to 30 mph.

The Chronicle reported that the drivers were from a group called the Texas Truckdrivers’ Association.

The drivers who started the protest reportedly hauled sand used in highway construction for Gulf Coast Stabilizing Materials, a Houston-based company.

Company president Dana Osborne told the Chronicle that he raised rates for his truckers by 19 percent this year. His most recent raise offer was turned down, he said.

The truckers circled the city once before gathering for a rally on Mount Houston, in the northeast part of Harris County.
