Glitch temporarily knocks out computer communication for CHP officers

A glitch in the California Highway Patrol’s computer equipment temporarily sent the patrol back about 30 years, technologically speaking.

Around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5 in Clairemont, CA, a computer glitch in CHP’s dispatch system in the traffic management division, knocking out some dispatch computers and making it impossible for patrol officers to check license plate and driver’s license numbers from their cars, the San Diego Union Tribune reported.

“We are back to pre-computer time dispatching,” CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt told the Union Tribune.

Fortunately, the officers were still able to communicate with dispatchers by phone, and dispatchers recorded information on 3x4 cards. The problem was resolved a few hours later, at approximately 11 a.m.
