Truck ban put on hold for major New York City bridge

A plan to ban trucks from a major New York City bridge has been stalled by a Manhattan judge.

After cracks were discovered in the steel decks of the Throgs Neck Bridge, a major artery between Long Island and upstate New York, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced that it would ban trucks weighing more than 89,000 pounds, except during the hours of 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., according to The New York Times.

Kathy Sweeney, spokeswoman for the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, told the New York Daily News that a rule restricting trucks of more than 80,000 pounds to those hours is already on the books.

However, the Road Transport Association, a trade organization that represents the region, said the ban would have an adverse affect on retail prices in the city, the Daily News reported.

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Paul Feinman agreed with the trade association, and has temporarily halted the truck ban. A court date for the matter has been set for Oct. 18.

The bridge is not at risk of structural failure from the cracks, according to The Times.
