South Carolina is dangerously close to breaking a record it would probably rather not have in the first place.

As of Thursday, Nov. 17, 967 people have died on state roads in South Carolina in 2005 – just 132 short of the state’s record of 1,099, which was set in 1972.

And, according to The Associated Press, this number will most likely be surpassed in late December, with the upcoming travel-heavy holiday season still on the horizon.

However, officials are hoping 2005 is the last year for such a record in the state – a new mandatory seat belt law goes into effect Dec. 9.
