Big Dig workers must pay for drinking water

“Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink.”

That’s the latest problem facing Big Dig workers in Boston, according to The Boston Herald.

It seems the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority has been charging workers on the ill-fated tunnel project $2 a month to drink from water coolers at work sites.

Not that the workers are forced to pay for the water. They are welcome to all of the tap water they can drink for free. But if they want to use the cooled, purified water in the coolers, they have to pony up.

Turnpike Authority spokeswoman Mariellen Burns told The Herald that $2 a month for water wasn’t really a bad deal.

“A bottle of water costs $2,” she said. “And this is just $2 a month.”

Of course, if the workers really want water that badly, all they need to do is look around the leaky tunnels, they’re bound to find it somewhere.
