Five truckers sentenced for falsifying logbooks

Five Virginia truckers were sentenced Nov. 10 for their roles in connection with an hours-of-service violations cover-up conspiracy.

On Nov. 10, Wayne S. Crawford, Michael Elam, Melvin Jackson, Charles Lyons and Richard McGhee, all former divers for K&C Trucking based in Rustburg, VA, were sentenced in U.S. District Court in Lynchburg, VA, for their roles in falsifying driver logbooks to conceal HOS violations, according to a Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General press release.

All five men had previously pleaded guilty to charges of making false statements and conspiracy.

Crawley was sentenced to 60 days home confinement; Jackson was fined $1,500; and McGhee, Elam and Lyons were each fined $500, according to the press release.

Norvell Preston, former president and co-owner of K&C Trucking pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court, Danville, VA, Jan. 20, 2005, to charges of conspiracy and making false statements related to drivers’ logbook entries, according to a previous OIG press release.

Preston, another co-owner of K&C, and seven company drivers were indicted in December 2002.

Sentencing for two K&C Trucking Inc. executives, a dispatcher, and two other drivers, who had also pleaded guilty on related charges, is scheduled for Jan. 18, 2006. FMCSA assisted with this investigation.
