Turkeys take the plunge in New Jersey

Perhaps they were inspired by the movie “Chicken Run.”

Two dozen live turkeys fell off a truck Friday, Nov. 18, on the New Jersey Turnpike, causing a traffic pile-up near Newark Liberty International Airport.

The Associated Press reported the birds were spotted by a tollbooth supervisor and that every effort was being made to return them to the trucker. However, it was not known if the trucker had even noticed they were missing.

“I think we should be investigating this as an escape attempt,” Joseph Orlando, spokesman for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, told The AP.

The AP reported that several other strange incidents have occurred on the highway in recent years, including a truck spilling 40,000 pounds of frozen chicken, an escaped dairy cow wandering onto the turnpike, and incidents involving escaped live crabs and horses.
