Overnight travelers on Interstate 95 near the
Wilson
Bridge
and Route 1 Interchange in
Virginia
should again prepare for heavy traffic impacts this weekend and possibly into
early next week.
On Nov. 18-21, crews will be lifting the next
group of 80-foot long steel beams across the Beltway lanes to support a new
ramp. During overnight hours this weekend – and into early next week, if
necessary – Interstate 95 South and North (the Beltway’s Inner and Outer Loops)
will each be reduced to one lane in the affected area during overnight hours,
with the remaining one lane on the Outer Loop periodically closing for 20-30
minute intervals, according to a press release.
In addition, the ramps from southbound and
northbound
Telegraph Road
to Interstate 95 North (Beltway Outer Loop) will be closed, and traffic will be
detoured during the same overnight hours.
Outer
Loop
motorists are advised that traffic impacts will begin prior to
Telegraph Road
, as
the Springfield Interchange Project also is planning to close Outer Loop lanes
this weekend during overnight hours. The Springfield Interchange Project is
scheduled to close two of four lanes on the Outer Loop from
Braddock Road
to
Van Dorn Street
.
Travelers are urged to avoid the area and
choose an alternate route. Drivers should consider the Beltway in the direction
of the
American
Legion
Bridge
or Interstate 395 through
Washington
,
DC
.
Long-distance drivers also may consider bypassing the Washington, DC, area
altogether by accessing southbound Route 301 near Baltimore, MD, or northbound
Route 301 near Richmond, VA, which then ties back in with Interstate 95.
All
Wilson
Bridge
lane closures will cease by Wednesday morning, Nov. 23, before the Thanksgiving
holiday. All lanes will remain open throughout the entire 7.5-mile project corridor
until Monday, Nov. 28, at 12 p.m., for the benefit of holiday travelers.
