A thief who stole a woman’s car in Danville, CA, soon found himself on the FasTrak to prison, thanks to the woman’s onboard toll-paying device.
The car was stolen from Dinah Thompson’s home in the middle of the night Sept. 22, but the thief either didn’t notice or didn’t bother to remove the FasTrak device from the car, according to the Contra Costa Times.
FasTrak allows users to log on to the Internet and monitor their account, which Thompson did, and fed the information to the police.
The thief crossed several toll bridges – sometimes more than once a day – over the course of the next few days, racking up 4,000 miles on the stolen car.
Thompson reported each move to the police, who used the information to track the thief’s movements, the Times reported. The FasTrak system even allowed the police to get a picture of the man and link him to other car thefts in the area.
Thompson’s car was eventually recovered and the thief arrested.
