Wrecks increase after red-light camera installation in Colorado

Installing red-light cameras at intersections in Fort Collins , CO , didn’t just increase the city’s revenues – it increased the number of accidents, too.

According to the Fort Collins Coloradoan, the accident rate per 1 million vehicles at the corner of Drake Road and College Avenue has nearly doubled since 1994, despite traffic-enforcement cameras that were installed at the intersection in 1997.

Despite an increase in accidents, the city is still bringing in plenty of cash from the cameras. Citations for running a red light at the intersection have risen in the same period of time by 64 percent.

“It gives me some questions,” City Manager Darin Atteberry told the Coloradoan. “I have been told consistently this will improve safety and reduce injury accidents. These are questions I’ll ask of police services and transportation engineering.”

The light remains the second-most dangerous intersection in Fort Collins , the Coloradoan reported.
