Transportation bonds OK'd in Maine

Voters in Maine overwhelmingly approved a ballot effort Nov. 8 that earmarks millions for transportation work in the state.

Question 2 asked voters to approve borrowing $33.1 million for improvements to highways and bridges. Some money will go to airports, public transit, ferries, ports and more.

The winning margin was about 68 percent to 32 percent, The Associated Press reported.

The question was one of five bond requests totaling $83 million that the Maine Legislature authorized to go before voters this fall. Voters approved four of the five requests.

The transportation bond makes the state eligible for more than $158 million in matching federal funds.

The transportation package includes $27 million for highway and bridge work. Of that total, $15 million will be used for reconstructing more than 100 miles of highways and improvements to more than 84 bridges throughout the state.

The Waldo Hancock Bridge replacement along U.S. 1 will get $12 million, the Kennebec Journal reported.

The last time voters in Maine failed to approve a transportation bond that included roads and bridges was 1969.
