Georgia settles with 15 stations regarding price gouging

Any fuel station owners looking to gouge consumers on fuel prices should probably keep Georgia on their minds.

The state – which led the charge against price gouging in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita – has settled with 15 fuel stations over price gouging charges.

The penalties in the settlements – filed in Fulton County Court on Tuesday, Nov. 15 – include both consumer restitution and civil penalties as high as $10,000, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

Gov. Sonny Purdue said in the news release that these 15 are only the first wave of settlements in an ongoing investigation.

“Gasoline price gouging will not be tolerated,” he said. “And we will continue to track down businesses who took advantage of Georgians during the hurricane crisis.”

Georgia has received 3,300 complaints of price gouging since Aug. 31 and is investigating more than 100 potential cases.

All fines from the settlements will be deposited in the state treasury. The gas stations will also be required to post signs on their pumps letting consumers know that if they think they were gouged and still have their receipts they can get a reimbursement.
