Committee OKs new U.S.-Canadian border crossing

An international group has recommended building a new border crossing between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.

A committee made up of representatives from the U.S. and Canadian governments approved building either a new bridge or a new tunnel to connect the two cities.

The Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail reported the decision officially drops two other proposals for the crossing. One involved twinning the Ambassador Bridge and the other involved converting a train tunnel for trucking use.

The Globe and Mail also reported the role of entrepreneur Matty Moroun, who controls the privately run Ambassador Bridge, has not yet been determined.

Bloomberg news reported the new crossing would link Highway 401 in Canada with Interstate 75 in the U.S.

The panel is expected to announce its preferred location for the project and other details by mid-2007.
