With winter’s fury already making an appearance in many parts of the country, at least one state is doing what it can to ensure truckers have the required chains.
On Tuesday, Nov. 15, the Oregon State Police began enforcing a rule that requires truckers to carry snow chains. The enforcement effort was conducted at five mountain passes throughout the state, according to The Associated Press.
Under Oregon code, there are three levels of chain laws during winter weather conditions:
In the current enforcement effort, officers are watching for Level I violations, meaning all trucks must be carrying chains. A total of six chains are required for Class 8 vehicles in the state, according to information from the reference text “For the Long Haul.”
However, it’s always a good idea to have spare chains because one of yours could break. And, Washington state, for example, requires you carry extras.
