Rhode Island cracks down on aggressive drivers

Aggressive drivers in Rhode Island beware – the state's police are gunning for you.

Radar gunning, that is.

On Tuesday, Nov. 8, Rhode Island State Police Maj. Steven O'Donnell announced a specialized effort – which will include special patrols and stakeouts – to watch for drivers who speed, change lanes excessively, tailgate, ignore red lights and are distracted by cell phones, according to various media reports.

In addition, the patrol is asking for other motorists who witness aggressive driving to report the incident by dialing 911 or *77 from their cell phones.

The program is ongoing, and is designed to improve Rhode Island's image as a good driving state. Various reports in recent years have ranked Rhode Island as one of the worst states in terms of drunken-driving fatalities, seat-belt use and driving knowledge, The Associated Press reported.
