Diluted fuel leaves drivers stranded

Dozens of motorists who thought they were getting a good deal on fuel found themselves stranded for hours at a Philadelphia gas station Thursday, Nov. 10.

The Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections has launched an investigation into Rising Sun Gas and Food Mart as well as the station's fuel distributor after several motorists were left stranded at the station when their vehicles were filled with gasoline that had been diluted with water.

According to local CBS affiliate WKYW-TV , about 12 drivers were stranded after they filled up with the tainted gas. A long line at the station had formed when it began selling the gas for more than 25-cents-a-gallon less than its competitor across the street. When people tried to start their vehicles after filling up, the engines died.

The station manager said that the gas was purchased at two cents above cost from ARFA, a Pennsauken, NJ-based distributor.

The vehicles had to be towed from the station. The station manager told WKYW-TV that the station will pay for the cost of the towing and will reimburse drivers for the money they paid for the gas.

The DLI said it could take a few days to sort out what happened and how the water got into the gas, but it does not suspect foul play.
