St. Louis rest area to receive upgrade

The former Gateway Travel Plaza in St. Louis is scheduled to get a facelift.

The plaza, located near the intersection of Interstate 55 and Interstate 70 in East St. Louis , was purchased by Pilot Corp. in August.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported that Pilot plans to add new diesel and gasoline pumps, new restaurants and a new truck wash.

The stop will also include a convenience store, deli, showers, a laundry room, a game room and a video rental store. New Taco Bell and Subway restaurants will replace The Big Duga buffet, which closed in July, according to a news release.

The company officials did not say when the renovations would be complete, but a job fair is scheduled at the site Tuesday, Nov. 15, to hire as many as 50 employees to staff the facility.
