OSHA fines logging firm in connection with trucker's death

A logging company in Washington has been fined in connection with the death of a trucker who was killed by a falling log last year.

According to the Yakima Herald-Republic, George Holland Jr., a trucker from Zillah , WA , was killed on Aug. 15 near Mount Adams Lake , WA , when a log being loaded on a truck fell and hit him in the head.

On Thursday, Nov. 3, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration fined Wheeler Logging a total of $17,000 for 11 safety violations – including six violations classified as “serious” – relating to the incident, according to an OSHA report.

The largest portion of the total fine – $4,200 – was for the company’s failure to inform OSHA of the accident. Other fines included improper storage of fuel tanks, nonessential personnel in the staging area, logs not being loaded in an “orderly manner,” and the lack of first-aid and CPR training for the employees on the accident scene, the Herald-Republic reported.

This was not the first time Wheeler Logging had been cited by OSHA for its actions during an accident. The company was fined $6,562 in relation to the death of employee Justin Ray Fuller in June 2003. Fuller was killed when the brakes on his water truck failed, according to the Herald-Republic.
