When trucker Chris Conroy called the police about a car whose driver appeared to be operating under the influence, he probably figured the police would handle it.
He probably had no idea he would be the one to make the stop.
But that’s just what happened on Interstate 95 in Florida on May 19, as an allegedly impaired driver led police on a slow speed chase – not more that 5 mph – down the busy highway.
According to news reports, the driver of the car, Eric Johnson, had phoned police himself three times to report himself as a drunken driver. By the time state troopers caught up with him, Johnson had pulled his vehicle off the side of the road and was walking around in circles.
Instead of giving himself up, Johnson got back in his car and led police on a chase that must have seemed to passers-by like it was happening in slow motion.
That’s when Conroy showed up. Conroy, who had already called the police to report Johnson, pulled over and watched as the chase went by his truck. Then, Conroy took it upon himself to get back in front of Johnson and stop so that his big rig would force Johnson to stop.
The ploy worked and Johnson was taken into custody.
