A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper and former OOIDA employee remains in critical but stable condition after being shot nine times during a routine traffic stop during the Memorial Day weekend.
The incident occurred early Saturday morning after trooper Brandon Brashear, 27, of Grain Valley, MO, pulled over a car that was driving erratically on Interstate 470 in the Kansas City, MO, suburb of Lee’s Summit, according to media reports.
When the officer got out of his patrol vehicle, the driver of the car shot Brashear. The suspect, Tommy R. Rollins Jr., then allegedly chased Brashear into the median of the road and shot him eight more times with a 9 mm assault rifle, The Kansas City Star reported.
A dash cam in the trooper’s car caught the incident on tape. Less than an hour later, officers arrested Rollins at a pool hall in nearby Independence, MO. According to The Star, Rollins told patrons in the pool hall that he had just shot an officer and asked them to call the authorities.
Rollins has been charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action, although officials told The Star additional charges could be filed. He is being held without bond.
According to The Associated Press, Rollins – who was recently fired from his job at an elementary school – claimed temporary insanity for his actions.
“I wasn’t even thinking when I did it,” Rollins said. “The society’s what caused me to do what I did. Just look at the society we live in.”
Michael Sanders, Jackson Country prosecutor, told The Star that Rollins’ reasoning is faulty.
“Mr. Rollins can try to blame anyone he wants to blame, but the reality is, society wasn’t out there pulling that trigger,” Sanders said.
Brashear, an Oklahoma native, was an employee at OOIDA before going on to join the state’s Highway Patrol force.
