Bill to toughen Illinois' stance on speeders advances

The Illinois Senate has approved a bill that would toughen up one of the state’s highway safety laws.

Senators voted 56-0 last week to advance a bill that would increase penalties for some offenses if they were committed by a person who was also speeding.

Under HB767, sponsored by Rep. Jack D. Franks, D-Woodstock, a court could impose more serious penalties on people who commit reckless homicide or drunken driving if they were traveling more than 20 mph over the posted speed limit when the offense was committed.

The bill, which unanimously passed the House earlier in the session, now moves to Gov. Rod Blagojevich for approval.
