More leaks and legal troubles for Boston's Big Dig

Two leaks are spraying 20 to 30 gallons of water a minute into Boston’s troubled Big Dig tunnel system, officials told Attorney General Tom Reilly Thursday, May 26.

Officials for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority told Reilly the leaks, located along Interstate 90 near the Fort Point Channel, are creating “a very manageable amount of water,” The Associated Press reported.

However, the leak is the latest in a series of problems and setbacks for the $14.6 billion construction project. Hundreds of other small leaks have plagued the tunnel system, most of which have occurred on I-93 near the downtown area, the Boston Herald said.

The news of the leaks broke just two days after a report that suggested privatization as a solution to the Turnpike Authority’s problems. The report by the Pioneer Institute, a Boston-area think tank, said moving the problematic Turnpike into the private sector – which would not face the same political consequences for raising or lowering tolls – could eliminate its financial woes, the Boston Globe reported.

A spokesperson for Gov. Mitt Romney told the Globe that a deeper examination of the report would have to involve cooperation of Turnpike chairman Matthew J. Amorello. Romney has previously tried to oust Amorello from his position after a major leak in September backed up rush-hour traffic for miles. Amorello has refused to resign.

“The Turnpike Authority owes it to the taxpayers and toll payers to be as forthcoming as possible in all matters relating to leaks,” an official for Romney said.
