FedEx opens database to government in terrorism fight

FedEx has made some changes to its operation in the name of aiding the federal government in its fight against terrorism, and it could involve your personal information.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the company has opened its international database, including credit card information, to government officials.

In addition, the company has set up a police force – recognized by the state of Tennessee where FedEx is headquartered – that will help investigate crimes, request search warrants and make arrests on FedEx property.

The company has also begun encouraging all of its employees – especially drivers – to be on the lookout for suspicious activities.

The Journal reported that few other big companies have given the government as much access to their files as FedEx. United Parcel Service, for example, said it would not allow access unless a federal warrant had been issued.

And even the U.S. Postal Service refuses to provide customer payment information without a warrant.

However, those stances may be for nothing in the near future, as a new version of the Patriot Act making its way through Congress would give law enforcement agencies more power to demand business records without a warrant.
