The Simpsonville, KY, City Commission has approved a zoning change on 29-acres of land near Interstate 64 that will allow for the expansion of a Pilot truck stop there.
The Sentinel-News reported that Icon Properties, the developer that owns the land, plans to move and rebuild the Pilot truck stop and add a motel and restaurant to the property, along with warehouse and office space.
Icon plans to move the truck stop about 100 feet north of the current entrance to alleviate traffic tie-ups. The truck stop does not currently allow overnight parking, and there is no word on whether or not that will change when it is rebuilt.
City officials say they hope the move will provide more parking for trucks and get them off the sides of the roads nearby.
Residents of the city, however, have accused the city council of ignoring their concerns about the truck stop.
Citing the usual lineup of complaints – noise, safety, and other hidden dangers – several concerned residents attended a recent city council meeting, according to the Sentinel-News.
“I’m not going to want to let my kid go down there,” said resident Lisa Roadcap.
