Pacific port parking poses problem for protesters

Approximately 50 trucks formed a convoy in downtown Oakland, CA, on Monday, May 23, to protest a new parking plan from the Port of Oakland.

The Daily Review, an Oakland based newspaper, reported that the truckers were angry about a notice from the port telling them that they had to vacate a 15-acre piece of land near the port that had previously been used for parking.

The truckers said the move is just the latest chapter in an ongoing expansion of the port that has gradually taken away parking spaces for trucks.

Port officials said the drivers were given plenty of notice, and that they knew all along that the parking area was only a temporary solution.

The port plans to build a 75-acre trucking center on the former Oakland Army Base, but those plans have stalled as various government agencies have squabbled about how to make the best use of the land.

The port is also planning to add another 30 acres that will be used strictly for truck parking.

The truckers told the Review that those solutions are fine, but they do nothing to solve the immediate parking shortage.

The protest shut down traffic in downtown Oakland for about a half an hour on Monday.
