Arrest made after gunshots on Missouri highway

What was originally thought to be a rogue sniper in Missouri was actually a drunken teenager, police near St. Louis said.

Jefferson County officials told The Kansas City Star they have arrested and charged 19-year-old Donald Christie with felony unlawful use of a weapon. Officials said Christie was showing off for friends at a nearby house party, and was not shooting at cars or police on nearby Highway 30 near Byrnes Mill, MO.

The charges follow an incident that occurred early Sunday morning, after officers responded to a call from a concerned driver who claimed to have seen muzzle flash and possible shots near her vehicle, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Officers responded, and shots continued to rain down on and around them and their vehicles for another 1 1/2 hours. No one was injured in the incident.

Oliver “Glenn” Boyle, county sheriff for Jefferson County, originally told Land Line that evidence was difficult to find in the dense, wooded bluffs near the scene.

“It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack,” Boyle said.

Christie is the only person in custody at this time, but officials told The Star that more people could face charges as the investigation continues.

“I’m very happy that there are charges against him, but I hope that we can get more charges through some more investigation,” Byrnes Mill Police Chief Ed Locke told The Star. “Whatever he was trying to do, we certainly didn’t take it as a joke.”
