Port proposes new structure to speed wait times

The Port of Miami Terminal Operating Co. has dropped its lawsuit against a group of truckers following an agreement on a new structure at the port.

In April, two other suits against the truckers – one filed by the Port of Miami-Dade and one filed by Universal Maritime Service – were also dropped.

The suits stemmed from a two-week wildcat strike led by truckers in 2004 to protest long wait times and poor service at the port.

Now that the third suit has been resolved, Chris Morton, senior manager of PMTOC, said in a news release that the operating company will implement a new structure to ease wait times and better handle driver complaints.

The structure will include bi-monthly meetings and a rapid response desk that will be responsible for complaints from trucking companies and drivers.

“As we finish the reconstruction of our terminal facilities to create quicker, more efficient turn times for the container trucks, we are pleased to announce a new structure to improve communications and more quickly resolve problems with the truckers,” Morton said.
