Alabama county slaps weight limits on trucks

You load 16 tons, and what do you get? A ticket and a fine if you’re in Alabama.

The Limestone County Commission posted 15-ton weight limits on six county roads in reaction to complaints that the trucks going to and from a quarry in the area were damaging the roads.

The Huntsville Times reported that quarry trucks traveling the roads are now limited to a maximum weight of 15 tons, though trucks with heavier loads are still allowed for local deliveries.

The six roads are near a rock quarry in Elkmont, AL, and the commission charged that trucks transporting crushed stones from the quarry were damaging the roads. The quarry, however, pays the county about $60,000 a year to use the roads.

The roads in question are:

  • Easter Ferry Road (2 sections, counted as two different roads);
  • Section Line Road;
  • Witty Mill Road;
  • Coffman Road; and
  • Edgewood Road.
