Toll lanes planned for Florida superhighway

Florida plans to build high-occupancy toll lanes down Interstate 4 in the central part of the state, media outlets reported.

The lanes would run along the highway from the Florida Turnpike to Seminole County, WKMG-TV reported. Construction could start as soon as four years from now, but might not be completed until well into the next decade.

The plan still has some opponents in the state, including U.S. Rep. John Mica, R-FL, The Orlando Sentinel reported. Critics have tagged the project’s toll provision as “Lexus lanes.”

However, the highway is regarded as one of the most clogged in the state, and runs through the crowded Daytona Beach, Orlando and Tampa Bay areas.

Jim Ely, COO of Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, said the project was not the tolling of an existing interstate.

“We’re adding new capacity, which is user-financed, and not tax-financed,” he told The Sentinel.
