Union officials expect that 11 Maine truckers who were fired after voting to join a labor union will get their jobs back this week, according to the Portland Press Herald.
The drivers, who worked for Black Bear Courier, Orono, ME, were among 50 drivers laid off after the company lost its contract with DHL, an international delivery company. It was after the drivers voted in January to join the International Brotherhood of Teamsters that DHL decided to end its contract with Black Bear.
DHL then contracted with Rydbom Express. The union claims that Rydbom refused to hire any of the former Black Bear drivers because they belong to the union.
In a complaint filed with the National Labor Relations Board, the union charged that Rydbom “interrogated prospective employees regarding their union activity, threatened prospective employees, made statements that unionization is futile and created an impression of surveillance.”
The Board is expected to issue a formal decision this week that will force Rydbom to hire the 11 drivers.
The Press Herald reported that the other 39 drivers had already found jobs with other companies.
