Swedish truck manufacturer Volvo sees a future where trucks would not have to idle at all to have a supply of electricity when they are parked.
The way to that future is through the development of fuel cell technology, as far as the OEM is concerned. To that end, Volvo has entered a joint venture to develop power units using fuel cells. It involves a newly patented technology that makes them small enough so they can be installed in standard trucks, according to a news release.
Powercell is the joint venture formed by Volvo and Statoil – a Norwegian oil company – to develop hydrogen fuel cell technology. The companies claim that the technology could reduce carbon dioxide emissions from a single truck by 20 to 30 tons per year.
