Google begins 3-D modeling of major U.S. cities

In its continued effort for total domination of the Internet, Google is working on yet another service for its vast suite of online applications – and this one could change the way you plan your routes.

The company, best known to the public for its search engine and to businesses for its customized advertising solutions, is using specially-equipped trucks with lasers and digital cameras to 3-D map the streets and roadsides of major U.S. cities, siliconvalleyreporter.com reported.

Once completed, the mapping – which is being conducted with the help of Stanford University – would offer a realistic 3-D version of a city for visitors to its site. The project is currently being tested in San Francisco, but will expand to other cities if it is successful.

According to siliconvalleyreporter.com, the company hopes to use this mapping technology to accentuate its Google Maps and Google Local online locator services.
