Homeland Security announces acting leader for TSA

With former chief David Stone resigned and Bush’s replacement nomination as yet unapproved, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has named an interim leader for the Transportation Security Administration.

Retired Army Colonel Kenneth Kasparin will serve as acting assistant secretary for Homeland Security and as acting administrator of the TSA, according to a news release from the government.

Kasparin most recently served as acting deputy administrator for TSA, and has also served as federal security director for the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Kasparin has been with the TSA for several years in a variety of positions, including North Central Area director and acting chief operating officer.

In addition, Chertoff also appointed Tom Blank as acting deputy administrator for TSA. Blank most recently served as associate administrator and chief support systems operator for the administration.

President Bush nominated Edmund Hawley to succeed Stone in May, but Congress has not approved Hawley’s nomination. Kasparin and Blank will serve in their positions until a permanent chief is approved.
