Fire in two historic buildings in Bartow, FL, has destroyed the Florida offices of the John J. Jerue Trucking Co.
On Monday, June 6, flames engulfed the Tate-Phillips building and the nearby Lane building, destroying everything inside, the St. Petersburg Times reported. Jerue’s offices filled both floors of the Tate-Phillips building, and the company was also leasing some offices in the first floor of the next-door Lane building.
According to the Polk County Democrat, firefighters responded to a smoke alarm at 7 a.m., but blamed faulty water lines and a lack of manpower for hampering their efforts to put out the blaze. By 9 a.m., the fire had engulfed the buildings, and firefighters could not contain it.
Nearby streets were blocked off, and the heat from the fire could be felt a block away, the Democrat reported. Fire fighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to two other nearby buildings.
Officials do not believe that arson was the cause for the fires, the Times said.
