Trucking company owner pleads guilty in Hired Truck scandal

The former owner of a Chicago-area trucking company pleaded guilty to fraud Thursday, June 9, raising the total number of guilty pleas in the city’s corrupt Hired Truck program to 12.

Joseph Ignoffo, owner of the now-defunct Ignoffo Trucking Co., pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud. Ignoffo said he had paid at least $23,000 in cash, campaign contributions and gift certificates to officials in four city departments in exchange for work for his company, the Chicago Tribune reported.

From his payoffs, Ignoffo averaged more than $430,000 a year in work within the corrupt truck program, which favored truck companies who gave bribes or campaign contributions for more work with the city.

Ignoffo also said he was asked for campaign contributions on behalf of the Committee to Elect John Daley, Mayor Richard M. Daley’s brother. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, this was the first time Daley’s name had been mentioned in the trial. The mayor has denied any knowledge of the payoffs when they were going on.
