The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority is hoping another $37 million will plug the leaks in its faulty Big Dig project.
A new audit says officials have authorized the money – more than twice the amount previously estimated – to help repair and prevent leaks in the problematic tunnel system along Interstate 93, the Boston Globe reported.
Of the $37 million, $2.8 million will be put toward a special hose system for injecting grout into the cracks; $1.6 million will repair water-damaged fireproofing material on the tunnel’s ceiling; and $11 million will be used to pay construction workers to repair the growing fissures.
There has been more than a fair share of problems with the Big Dig’s $14.6 billion construction. In April, a construction mishap rained chunks of rock and concrete onto cars traveling in the I-93 section of the tunnel. Hundreds of other smaller leaks have also plagued the roadways.
Turnpike officials told the state’s Attorney General in late May that portions of the tunnel were spraying “a very manageable” 20 to 30 gallons of water into the tunnels per minute.
