Texas county targets trucks with possible bond

Everything’s bigger in Texas. Even fees for trucks, if one county has its way.

The commissioners of Washington County – which is located near the center of the Dallas-Houston-San Antonio triangle – are considering a system that would require large trucks that make multiple trips on county roads for extended periods of time to post a commercial bond to help pay for road repairs.

A five-member task force has been appointed to study the system, according to the Brenham Banner-Press. Members of the task force include representatives from the sheriff’s office weights and measures division as well as the county road and bridge administrator.

The task force will examine other commercial truck bonding systems already in place in neighboring counties. The Banner-Press said the committee is particularly concerned with truck traffic traveling to and from oil and gas wells located within the county.

The commission did not release a time frame for the study or for implementing the proposed bond program.
