Diesel engines, the bionic man, and Australian boxfish don’t have much in common at first glance, but engineers for DaimlerChrysler found a way to bring the three together in the form of a new concept car.
The car, called the Bionic, features a high performance diesel engine and a design based on the efficient shape of the Australian boxfish.
Thomas Weber, head of research and technology for DaimlerChrysler’s Mercedes Car Group, told an audience at the automaker’s Innovation Symposium recently that the boxfish – which is a squared fish with a hard, almost pointed nose – is so efficient that it rarely needs to move its fins.
The lightweight car contains a lot of aluminum and engineers claim that its four-cylinder diesel engine gets up to 70 miles per gallon.
The car was built as a concept car to test new ideas and is not likely to be marketed in its current form.
